Turning up to record some demos at John Hamiltons studio in Ruislip in the mid/late seventies, who should welcome me, but Ollie. I was shocked that he was going to be my session musician for the day. He was brilliant, so helpful and we laid down 4 tracks. An absolute genius and gentleman.

Conocí a Ollie muy bien, cuando vivía en Deia, además de ser un buen cliente de nuestro Bar fueron muchas las veces que toco música en el. Bar Music Pub "Sa Cova Negra" Deia, Mallorca.

I knew Ollie very well, when he lived in Deia, in addition to being a good customer of our Bar, he played music in it many times. Bar Music Pub "Sa Cova Negra" Deia, Mallorca.

Hi, just stumbled upon this after seeing notice of some reissue on Think Like A Key (worthy label). Great! I fell under Ollie's spell through Boxer's first album, then progressed to Patto and Timebox, only got to Kevin Ayers later, strangely enough. But it's never too late.

What a great rabbit hole to fall into via Kevin Coyne and Brian Godding, reconnecting me with my distant but formative years. Ollie was well ahead of his time but the archive is a fitting tribute and brilliant resource. I've only scratched the surface tonight but will be doing some serious geology in due course. Always a huge,huge Patto fan and Ollie is/was by far my favourite guitarist and taken far too soon,such a shame that Patto never got the recognition they well deserved,what a band they were.

I inadvertently came across Ollie when researching Kevin Ayres and Soft Machine info, and what a wonderful way to discover his phenomenal musicianship and multi-abilities.That was a couple of months back, and have been working my way backwords into his discography.A true overlooked genius, and a real character besides.Thanks to Barry Monks and John Halsey for insightful and informative backstories along with keeping his music and memory alive.I had never heard of him, and I am so very glad I did.Would of liked to tip a pint with him to be sure.Great Player!

Loved Patto from the first time I saw them/you in 1971 in Dusseldorf with Rod Stewart and the Faces and I believe, May Blitz. Front row seats at the Rheinhalle. Mummy sticks in my mind, on your knees. Then Fairfield Halls in Croydon then a couple of times at the Marquee in 1973. Then life took over, and now in the 2020s, in Mildura Australia, thanks to the desire to rekindle memories I'm back, Torrington concert, the albums, and a new love all ovetr again. Thank you.

Loved Ollie from the first time I heard PATTO on vinyl in the 70s in my teens. Just incredible guitarist and those vibes - only realised thirty years later that i am a jazz fan as well as a rock fan, and those Patto albums are kind of both. I was so sad to read about his death some years after the event. Such a shame.

Hi. First of all, thanks for your comments about the Viv Stanshall album Dog Howl In Tune which I've been working on. I had no idea this archive existed so well done! It's been such a pleasure to hear Ollie's playing every day - really a labour of love. I grew up listening to Kevin Ayers and ended up playing with him as bass player in The Wizards of Twiddly - Ollie was in our minds as we got the arrangements together. Rehearsing today for the Dog Howl album launch at the Liverpool Phil on 15 Sept where Twiddly guitarist Carl Bowry will be twisting his mind and fingers around, among others, Strongth which you mentioned in your comments. Ollie's never far away! Keep up the good work...Friz

Whoever you are, I would just like to thank you deeply. I just spent three months cycling around Europe and my last but one stop was in Madrid where I spent a week at the campsite there, doing my best to encounter the ghost of Ollie Halsall. In all the years I have religiously followed Kevin Ayers I never thought to listen to Patto; just not enough hours in the day I guess. But what a revelation it was to finally heed your promptings and discover more about the genius of Ollie. Thanks again, you deserve some kind of award for this website!
